2021 Grammy Awards
Yes we’re still in a Palladium, so things like awards shows are a bit different than we are used to. It’s a way to get creative with how content is presented. So a classic like the Grammy’s (one of the biggest nights in music) was tasked with creating an experience that could come close to, or even rival that of previous years. Did they accomplish it…. They came close.
I think the 63rd Grammy Awards did a great job of showing diversity in the talent that performed. Performances from multiple genres (hip hop, rock, country, alternative, kpop). Trevor Noah as host was also a good decision, he was upbeat corky, and help moved the show along seamlessly. You could tell he was having fun and made it more enjoyable to watch. Because of Covid they had to make a number of changes most notable was the performance stage setups. It gave an American Bandstand type of feel with being able to see the cameras and people in the background. I loved that they used a 360 stage set up. There were multiple stages set up around the studio which I believe made it easier to personalize backdrops and props for each performance. And the stage set ups for each performance was crazy. Bad Bunny had an eye in lights, Taylor Swift had a whole Hobbit forest, Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B had a high heel shoe, with a dancer inside of it, and a whole Giant bed with pillows and sheets. So trust no expense was cut on the set up. They also added a video bio section before the performances which allowed us to get up close and a little personal with the nominees.
Another aspect that was different was the fact they did the award presentations outside. I don’t think I ever remember an Awards show of this caliber done outside. It allowed for social distancing, the only hang up was you could hear traffic and cars in the background. The first award given was Best new Artsist, presented by Lizzo who most definitely brought personality to the stage. The Winner, Megan Thee Stallion who was a Grammy favorite of the night.
